The world of play is accessible to children with all types of abilities through our toy lending libraries that offer traditional as well as adaptive toys for children and their families to check out at no cost and enjoy at home. The adaptive toys are operated with special switches or attachments that assist in teaching new skills and help build a base for children to reach their full potential. Toys may be checked out for two weeks at a time. For locations, hours or more information about the Toy Lending Libraries, or to donate gently used toys, please email email@example.com or call (805) 547-1914.
Meet the woman who started Jack's Helping Hand's Assistance Program (from the closet of her guest bedroom), Mary! Mary has contributed to Jack’s Helping Hand since its inception thirteen years ago. When the organization began she and the Ready family thought, “‘We are meant to do this," and have been doing it ever since. Mary is now retired but still a very active member of the Jack's Helping Hand family. Thank you Mary, your hard work helped make Jack's Helping Hand a reality!

Every month, we highlight a child so you can hear about the wonderful children that we help in our community. This month we would like you to meet Joey. Joey is a loving eight-year-old boy born with Pierre Robin syndrome, cleft palate as well as a host of other physical limitations. He has developmental delays and is non-verbal. This type of diagnosis means that the family has made many trips to and from UCLA, CHLA, and Santa Barbara for tests, procedures, and surgeries. Jack’s Helping Hand has been there for Joey and his family when those times got tough. Joey loves being with other kids, his family and, of course, his dog, Abby! Joey has a way of lighting up a room when he enters and has a keen sense of noticing when someone needs help. Joey is an active participant in both of Jack’s Helping Hand’s therapeutic programs, Little Swimmers and Little Riders. "Jack's Helping Hand has provided us with gas cards, meal gift cards and most of all, financial support for our hotel stays when traveling to/from hospitals. We can’t thank them enough! We are EXTREMELY grateful for Jack's Helping Hand! The Ready Family, the entire JHH team, Board of Directors and EVERYONE involved has been and continues to create an amazing gift to the Special Needs community by offering what they do!" -The Scangerello Family

Jack's Helping Hand was founded by Paul and Bridget Ready in memory of their son Jack, whose three-year struggle with a rare form of brain cancer ended in 2004. Our mission is to provide community programs that meet the unique challenges of children with cancer or special needs under the age of 21. Like all children, Jack played games, interacted with others, learned how to communicate, eat and behave. But Jack needed special assistance to do those things. During the course of Jack’s treatments, the Readys realized that many families of children with disabilities require assistance to meet their children’s special needs. Jack’s Helping Hand was created to assist children in the community with cancer and special needs who have unmet physical, mental and medical needs. To apply for assistance today, visit www.jackshelpinghand.org!

We are fortunate to have a group that helps with not only day to day needs, but also help plan Camp Reach for the Stars and the Oncology Holiday Party. Make sure to take a minute this week and recognize the important role they play in healthcare and the contributions they have made in our society!
